From Trash to Puppets: Street Puppet Building Workshop
In this two day workshop, you will learn how to turn reclaimed materials into powerful imagery that moves your message through the community. Participants will explore a brief history of street puppetry and gain hands-on experience in up-cycling and scavenging free materials to create large-scale puppets and expressive masks for street performance.
When: Saturday, May 30th 2026 and Sunday, May 31st 2026 from 10AM-1PM. This workshop is spread across two days to allow for adequate drying time of the puppets.
Where: Classroom 2 in the Creativity Center at 3317 Eastern Ave.
Materials: All materials are included. Participants are encouraged to bring any personal household items to up-cycle, but not required.
Age: 10+. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Hot glue and sharp blades will be used in building the puppets.
Cost: Pay what you can (suggested donation of $30). RSVP is required.
About the Instructor:
Tavia La Follette is a transdisciplinary conceptual artist, meaning her medium is driven by the idea. She is a storyteller working in spaces where the fields-of-practice are porous, to build new knowledge for our ever-evolving world. LaFollette believes in the human spirit & embodies the entire process as cultural evolution. Growing up in NYC in the 70’s/80’s, her aesthetic heart and curatorial eye carry the struggles of the city at that time and the art that grew from that labor. Currently Based out of Baltimore, with political cartoonist, Gary Huck, their most impressive experimental work are their twins, Max and Calder.
