Traditional Block Printing Masterclass with Artist Sunaina Bhalla | OCT 2 | 5:30-7:30
This special two hour master class explores how traditional block printing can be reimagined through experimentation and pattern play. Led by Master Artist Sunaina Bhalla, participants will learn the fundamentals of traditional Indian hand block printing while working with a collection of hand-carved printing blocks. Throughout the session, participants will have time to experiment with color, composition, and pattern placement on paper before creating their own hand block-printed shawl to take home.
No prior experience is required, and all materials included.

Sunaina Bhalla is a contemporary artist of Indian origin based in Singapore. Her interdisciplinary practice spans installation, embroidery, printmaking, and textile-based research, and is rooted in long-term investigations into the body as a site of memory, repetition, and material inscription. She trained as a textile designer specialising in print before undertaking five years of study in traditional Nihonga painting in Tokyo under Suiko Ohta-sensei of the Kyoshin-Do school. She holds an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London, and LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore, where her research explored gesture and the ritual of pain.
Her recent work expands into The Saree Project, a long-term research initiative examining the saree through museum collections, archives, and contemporary practice. The project considers how histories of gender, labour, colonialism, and cultural transmission are embedded within textile objects and their display across institutions and geographies.
Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in public and private collections.
