Salons during the Harlem Renaissance were vital, intimate gatherings hosted in private homes and social spaces. They provided sanctuary for Black intellectuals, artists, and LGBTQ+ figures to share their work, debate politics, and shape the “New Negro” movement. These safe havens were crucial in launching the careers of iconic figures like Zora Neale Hurston, Countee Cullen, Alain Locke, and Jean Toomer. “What is Art?” will recreate this phenomenon to explore a provocative yet essential conversation that is at the heart of creating a path forward for arts and culture in the City of Baltimore. An intergenerational panel of guest conversationalist will include Dr. Leslie King Hammond and Ernie Shaw. Join us for engaging conversation, enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres and drinks, and foster community with each other through exploration of arts.
