She was a true pioneer for women in the country music industry and a wild character whose personal stories shine in their retelling, again and again. Emotive and sultry, her contralto could describe the depths of the human condition with rare poignance. Hers was a voice of the century. This unique performance will honor her in song and story.

2nd Annual Charm City Burlesque & Variety Festival

The 2nd Annual Charm City Burlesque and Variety Festival runs Friday September 27 through Saturday September 28, 2024 at Baltimore’s Creative Alliance, home to some of Baltimore’s first burlesque and variety shows. Burlesque is many things. It is sexy. It is sly. It is seductive. It shines a light on the morals and foibles of modern life and mocks them openly. In Baltimore, Burlesque is all of those things, and it is also unabashedly weird, strange, dark, funny, and a little bit twisted. Baltimore’s burlesque and variety stages have always welcomed the different and the avant-garde. Baltimore marvels in the filthy, the strange, the strangely beautiful, and the sometimes questionable and it makes it its own. The Charm City Burlesque & Variety Festival celebrates all.

Rancho Aparte: Colombian Chirimía Music

Rancho Aparte was founded by charismatic singer/composer Dino Manuelle, together with a group of musician friends, to take the chirimía sound beyond Chocó, bringing the music to national and international audiences. Today the group consists of Dino Manuelle (vocals), Dyam Palacios and Emer Davila (chimiria), Fredy Cañandas (euphonium), Rodian Rivas (percussion), Rodolfo Romaña (percussion), and Ronal Campaña (cymbals). The group takes its name from a local slang phrase, “hacer rancho aparte,” which roughly translates as “to set up on one’s own”—reflecting their desire to put their own stamp on this music while preserving and respecting its complicated legacy. Live, Rancho Aparte is a first-tier party band, drawing on not only traditional music, but also on all the music they grew up listening to, embracing the swagger and dynamism of salsa, hip hop, and reggaeton in an omnivorous sound they call “funky punk chirimía.”

The Black Choreographers Festival is a weekend celebrating the talented Black choreographers in Baltimore. The Third Annual Irish Tenor Banjo Summit

The Third Annual Irish Tenor Banjo Summit takes over Creative Alliance on November 15th and 16th! Join us for a full weekend of dancing, performances, and workshops celebrating traditional Irish music. The brunch, talks, and sessions on November 17 to cap the weekend will take place at the Green Room in Hampden. Full festival passes are available as well as tickets to individual events.

The Other British Invasion: Tribute to British Folk-Rock

In the late 1960s, taking their cue from American rock bands like The Byrds, The Band, and The Flying Burrito Brothers, who had forged American roots music with rock and roll, British bands like Fairport Convention and The Pentangle began to do the same with their own folk music roots. What blossomed from this in the early 1970s was a British folk-rock boom, with acts such as Steeleye Span, John Martyn, Nick Drake, and many more joining the fray, and succeeding in making their mark not only in Britain but also on the US music scene.

Hank Williams Tribute Show 2024

Hank Williams was a consummate country songwriter, with hits that included "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," "Your Cheatin' Heart," "The Lovesick Blues," and "Jambalaya." He died at the age of 29, on New Year's 1953, leaving behind a legacy of songs and performances that will not be forgotten. In the six years of his recording career, Hank Williams songs created the definition of the perfect country song. This popular show brings together an all-star cast of friends who get together just once a year to celebrate the songs of a country music idol.

LOW TICKET WARNING! Baby Laurence Legacy Project: Tracing Steps

Creative Alliance's inaugural performing artist in residence, tap dancer and vocalist, Brinae Ali, and her bandmates of the Baltimore Jazz Collective celebrate the life and legacy of Baltimore's greatest tap dancer: Baby Laurence (February 24, 1921-April 2, 1974). Baby Laurence was the first tap dancer to record a jazz album—Dancemaster (recorded in 1959, released in 1977). Brinae will be sharing works in progress that reimagine his music, as well as original compositions and choreography. The Baby Laurence Legacy Project is supported by NEFA's National Dance Projects, Johns Hopkins University Billie Holiday Center for Liberation Arts, and Peabody Jazz & BFA Dance Department.

Slow Reactors – A new electronic project from Reid Anderson (The Bad Plus)

Reid Anderson’s work as a composer and bass player has helped to define the sound of The Bad Plus since its inception in 2001. Widely considered one of the most significant groups of their time, The Bad Plus has amassed widespread acclaim and created an uncompromising body of work that spans 15 studio albums and countless live performances.

The Bad Plus are widely considered to be one of the most significant groups of their time and Anderson’s prolific work as a composer has defined their sound throughout the years.

His new band with Tina Priceman (Violin) and Gregg Belisle-Chi (Guitar) is based on his long time passion for electronic music. Using analog synths and drum machines Anderson explores the compositional and interactive possibilities of electronic music with live musicians.

Paolo Angeli

The guitarist, composer, ethnomusicologist, and instrument builder Paolo Angeli is associated with traditional Sardinian music.  Whatever you want to call it, nobody else is doing it quite like this. Paolo Angeli, the Sardinian sorcerer, manually magics beautiful, multi-layered music from his unique prepared guitar: a hybrid orchestra of an instrument with strings going in all directions, foot-pedal-controlled motorised propellers and hammers to create shimmering drones and bass-lines as he bows, strikes, plucks and strums while producing rhythmic atmospherics by treading on a plastic bag and adjusting tunings on the fly. Electronic effects are utilized but no loops. With this singular instrument he improvises and composes unclassifiable music, suspended between traditional music of Sardinia, free jazz, flamenco, arabic suggestions, post-folk and pre-everything else, and came back in Sardinia with his voice in to the furrows of tradition

Our Box Office is currently open from Noon to 5pm on Tuesday thru Saturdays and one hour before all ticketed events. We accept cash, cards, and checks. Service fees are waived for in-person ticket purchases.
