The event features programming and two short documentary films that chronicle the lives of Mexican restaurateurs living in Baltimore (Jose Vargas) and in New Orleans (Ivan Castillo). From their work as street vendors to building community through their food traditions, Jose and Ivan have each taken unique approaches to carve their own niches in these urban places.
In this hands-on workshop we will learn about musical instruments that have been made across Central and South America for thousands of years and learn to build our own working clay flutes.

Learning about the musical instruments of the ancient Americas and building and playing our own instruments helps us to awaken the memory of our connection to nature, cultivate presence through the working with clay, and experience joy through sound and music-making. Larry & Joe were destined to make music together. Larry & Joe is the duo of Joropo maestro Larry Bellorín (Monagas, Venezuela) and GRAMMY-nominated bluegrass and oldtime star Joe Troop (Winston-Salem, North Carolina). These two virtuosic multi-instrumentalists fuse their respective Venezuelan and Appalachian folk traditions on the harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, upright bass, guitar, and maracas to prove that music has no borders. Their engaging bilingual (esp/eng) program includes storytelling, humor, singalongs, and dancing.

To mark our 10th anniversary, Viva Brasil! expands to a weekend celebration of Brazilian culture! Tonight we celebrate the sound of sunshine! In Brazil, the word bossa is old-fashioned slang for something done with particular charm, natural flair, or innate ability. When it comes to Brazilian music, the first song that might come to mind is "The Girl From Ipanema" penned by songwriter Antônio Carlos Jobim and performed by singer Astrud Gilberto, guitarist João Gilberto, and saxophonist Stan Getz. That song is a flagship in the Brazilian genre bossanova, which translates to "new style" or "new trend." It emerged in the 1950s and 60s combining elements of samba—a popular music genre in Brazil—with American jazz traditions. We celebrate the great legacy of bossanova this evening, with a debut performance of renowned Brazilian pianist, Marcos Ariel.
Students will learn and practice the basic movements of capoeira, both solo and with partners, while following the teacher through movements and sequences. Students will also learn the songs of capoeira and, through them, the Portuguese language and Afro-Brazilian history and culture. Students will sing as well as learn to play instruments such as berimbau, pandeiro, agogo, reco-reco, and atabaque as part of the class.

Learn the basics of Recife’s carnival dance, frevo! Frevo (from the Portuguese word ferver, meaning "to boil") is an effervescent dance and music genre associated with the street carnivals of Recife, the capital of Brasil’s northeastern state of Pernambuco. There are many styles of frevo dance, and our classes focus on street frevo. Dancer and scholar Kate Spanos will demonstrate and teach this fun, high-energy dance using the methodology of Mexe Com Tudo (Otávio Bastos) of Recife, which highlights individual expression and challenges traditional aesthetic standards in dance. This approach to frevo welcomes everyone to dance in the ways that bring them the most pleasure.
Learn samba from Ilheuma Zezeh, Brazilian dancer, teacher, choreographer, performer, and healer from São Paulo, with a mission to bring more joy to the world through art. Ilheuma Zezeh will demonstrate and teach the basics of samba dance.
Our annual mid-winter Carnival celebration is back, featuring concerts, dancers, capoeira, and more! Carnival dates back to the 1600s and is a celebration of Brazilian life and culture.
Las Cafeteras has taken the music scene by storm with their infectious live performances and have crossed genre and musical borders. Their electric sound and energy has taken them around the world playing shows from Bonnaroo to the Hollywood Bowl, WOMAD New Zealand to Montreal Jazz, and beyond!

Caña Dulce y Caña Brava offers a performance which exhibits the music, poetry, dance and traditional attire of Veracruz, Mexico, interpreted by artists who are beneficiaries of the jarocho culture and noteworthy performers with years of experience on both national and international stages.

Over the course of four sessions, we will build understanding of and confidence with the skills needed to design, build, and decorate both simple and sculptural clay flutes.

In Latin American tradition, families gather and acknowledge their mama with gifts, food, and live music. CIELO of the Creative Alliance invites you to celebrate all mamas in the Latin American way with performances and music!
