Jake Blount is a performer and scholar of Black folk music based in Providence, RI. Initially recognized for his skill as a string band musician, Blount has synthesized his scholarly and artistic pursuits into a diverse performance practice that has taken him to Carnegie Hall, Newport Folk Festival, NPR’s Tiny Desk, and beyond. His albums, released on Free Dirt Records and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, have been featured in best-of lists from NPR, The New Yorker, and Rolling Stone. His scholarly publications include “Jail the Zombie: Black Banjoists, Biopolitics, and Archives,” published in Modern American History. He also served as a music consultant for the movie Sinners, and performed on the soundtrack of Ken Burns’s The American Revolution. Blount holds an A.M. in Musicology and Ethnomusicology from Brown University, where he is working toward a Ph.D. in the same and a second master’s degree in Anthropology. Megan Jean & Byrne Klay are a genre-fluid acoustic duo rooted in soulful songwriting, deep American roots traditions, and decades of road-tested performance. Known for their powerful vocal blend, emotional immediacy, and dynamic musicianship, the duo delivers intimate performances that feel both timeless and urgent.
The duo has performed at renowned venues and stages including the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage, and has been featured on PBS’s More Than the Music and NPR’s Mountain Stage. As a support act, Megan Jean & Byrne Klay have shared the stage with Shovels and Rope, Amythyst Kiah, Randall Bramblett, Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, and 10,000 Maniacs, among others.
Megan Jean Klay is a veteran songwriter and vocalist with a 20-year career that began in New York City’s East Village while studying theatre at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. During that time, she held a residency at CBGB’s and performed at venues including The Knitting Factory and Pianos. With Byrne Klay, she co-founded Megan Jean and the Klay Family Band (KFB), later abbreviated to KFB, releasing multiple self-produced albums and performing 2,000+ shows nationwide.
As a vocalist, Megan Jean has also appeared on nationally recognized recordings, including her featured vocals on “Barnburnin’” by Gangstagrass, which reached #5 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart.
In addition to their duo work, Megan Jean and Byrne Klay co-lead the full band Megan Jean’s Secret Family, whose debut full-length album PLOT (Play Loud On Turntable) was released in October 2024 with support from a Maryland State Arts Council Creativity Grant. Megan Jean’s Secret Family made their national radio debut on NPR’s Mountain Stage and have shared stages with acts including Fastball, Spin Doctors, Joan Osborne, Cabinet, and Cris Jacobs.
