James Taylor–Why We’re Here: An Overview of Variety’s Near-Past Origins

If you think “the good old days” of the “business of show” was the conclusion of the last century, oh, nay nay. Sideshow historian and museum creator James Taylor takes you on the wild ride that—in the “modern era” of the last several hundred yearsæ—is the broad picture of the industry, from circus to world’s fairs to dime museums to wild west shows to burlesque and beyond.

James Taylor has been called “the world’s foremost authority on sideshow” c/o Shocked and Amazed! On & Off the Midway, the world’s only periodical on contemporary and historical sideshow and novelty and variety exhibition. He has been covering “the other entertainment” for over three decades and has been featured in all major broadcast and print media worldwide for his work in that field. He is also the co-founder of Baltimore’s American Dime Museum, Washington DC’s Palace of Wonders and Red Palace, as well as the impending First Call Paranormal & Oddities Museum in Havre de Grace.
