The Banjo Project Presents “Banjo Diasporas and Keepers of the Flame”
Hosted by Tony Trischka, with Dom Flemons, Cynthia Sayer, Amadou Kouyate, Brad Kolodner, Justin Golden, and more!

Celebrating the launch of The Banjo Project digital museum (banjo.emerson.edu) and the 25th anniversary meeting of the Banjo Gathering, this program combines multimedia with live performances to explore stories of America’s intersectional instrument from its African roots to the present. Produced by Marc Fields, creator of the PBS docs Give Me the Banjo (narrated by Steve Martin, with Pete Seeger, Earl Scruggs, Rhiannon Giddens, Bela Fleck) and Willie the Lion (about stride piano legend Willie the Lion Smith).

About the Banjo Gathering: Join us Nov. 3 – 6, 2022 in-person or virtually at the historic Peale Museum in Baltimore for the 2022 Banjo Gathering! We are holding this year’s Gathering in Baltimore in order to recognize the city’s role in banjo manufacturing, the early presence of banjos in the Chesapeake region, and how the enduring consequences of enslavement shape our understanding of banjo history.

The Gathering consists of three full days of presentations, exhibitions, and a banjo marketplace for studying, buying, selling, and trading historical and vintage banjos, parts, and related items. Banjos from some of world’s finest instrument makers are also available to view and buy or trade. Since 1998, the Banjo Gathering has been the platform for banjo collectors, researchers, instrument builders, and musicians to share new scholarship and findings about the banjo as a historical, cultural, and built object.
