Intermissions | Pamela Woolford: Antoine and Me

A surreal love story by Pamela Woolford, Antoine and Me is a multimedia project that includes handmade photo albums and the emergence of a new art form, sound-designed photo narrations or SDP narrations. In this first SDP narration series, Woolford models as a character who is in love with the photographer who takes the photographs. For seven photographs from the shoot, Woolford has written and performs, in the voice of the character, descriptions of each photograph in sound-designed audio tracks. She sets her Antoine and Me narrations in an ambiguous time period with elements of the past, an alternate present, or an imagined future, creating a new form of Afrofuturism. She is inspired by photo albums and scrap books created by her paternal grandmother, Gertrude Woolford, which, long after Gertrude Woolford has passed on, serve as a documentation and glimpse into her once life as a spirited, young Black woman in Baltimore a hundred years ago. The two oversized Antoine and Me handmade photo albums contain about 60 photographs from the series, as artwork representing the quotidian beauty of photo albums, including those of our Black ancestors.

American Music: Ellington at 125 Live Album Recording

Be part of history! Tonight's concert will be recorded live for an album release. Join us for an enchanting evening as we pay homage to the unparalleled Duke Ellington, an iconic figure whose musical genius transcended boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on the fabric of modern music. A true pioneer in the realm of jazz, Ellington's compositions surpassed mere entertainment—they emerged as a compelling voice against racial inequality. Through his innovative and emotive arrangements, Ellington not only highlighted the struggles and triumphs of African Americans but also mesmerized diverse audiences with his unique ability to weave intricate stories through sound. His influence reverberates through time, traversing the infectious rhythms of the Harlem Renaissance to the soul-stirring melodies of the Civil Rights era and beyond, encompassing Jazz, swing, fusion, pop, and theatre. In commemoration of his 125th Anniversary, we are honored to be joined by four world-class solo pianists. Baltimore-based Lafayette Gilchrist and Marc Cary, along with Philadelphia-based Orrin Evans and James Hurt, will interpret and expound on Ellington's legacy. Together, they will guide us through the rich tapestry of Ellington's musical journey, bringing to life the enduring power of music to inspire change.
