We host accessible, diverse, intro to hand-building workshops created for communities of color in Baltimore. This workshop is open to everyone.

Jasmin Nessa Ali is a Guyanese fashion designer from Queens, New York. She moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 2018, where she graduated with a BFA in Fiber and Experimental Fashion from Maryland Institute College. Currently, she is working on designing and releasing unique, hybrid clothing collections out of her bedroom studio. The main pillars of her brand, NESSA, are utilitarianism and Indo-Caribbean aesthetics. The purpose of the brand is to elevate collaboration among artists and speak power to Guyanese people for as long as NESSA thrives.

Musical instruments have helped us communicate and express ourselves since the beginning of human culture. Learning about the musical instruments of the ancient Americas and building and playing our own instruments helps us to awaken the memory of our connection to nature, cultivate presence through working with clay, and experience joy through sound and music-making. In this hands-on workshop, participants will get an in-depth introduction to the Ocarina, a type of globular clay flute that has been made for thousands of years in Central and South America. Over the course of four sessions, we will build understanding of and confidence with the skills needed to design, build, and decorate both simple and sculptural clay flutes.
This drop-in figure drawing course is suitable for all skill levels. Untrained new artists will learn multiple approaches to figure drawing while seasoned artists will have the opportunity to hone their skills and further train their eye. Each class will feature a nude model and begin with quick gesture poses. The remaining time will be spent on the artistry of longer poses. The goal is to train all artists to more quickly and fluidly capture the gesture of the entire figure.

Want to work with a diverse group of people to create performances? So do we! Move Move Collaborative artists will draw on years of experience to offer movement practices outside of traditional dance classes. The first four classes feature movement artists Peter Redgrave, Matt Williams, Ariel Foster, and more; sharing techniques that range from butoh to contact improv to clowning. These techniques come to a head in the fifth session, which centers around planning an original performance! Participants will learn about different ways to organize a performance—durational, score based, and choreographed modes will be explored. In 2013, a group of jazz players and Korean traditional musicians started to play jam sessions based on traditional Korean folk melodies and shamanistic rhythms, eventually forming SE:UM. The eclectic quintet is composed of saxophonist Hachul Song, trumpeter Jongsang Park, bassist Jaeha Lee, traditional percussionist Minhyeong Lee, and gayageum (twelve-stringed Korean zither) player and music director, Joon Lee. The members of SE:UM have learned to respect one another’s musicalities over the years, and succeeded in breaking down the borders between their musical conventions, finding balance and harmony in their own music.

Forget the exercise and join the party! Zumba is an exercise program that is inspired by movements and steps from Latin dances. Created and founded in Colombia in 1990 by the Colombian dancer and choreographer Beto Pérez, it fuses high- and low-intensity movements to lower calories in a fun way. In these classes, balance and flexibility are combined with cardiovascular and muscular work and increased energy.
Curious about crankies? During this workshop, mixed media artist Marian McLaughlin guides you through the process of crafting your own multi-dimensional storytelling device with acrylic paint on fibrous Tyvek paper scrolls. Through crafting crankies, engage in visual, kinetic, and narrative concepts. And then take home a miniature crankie box of your own creation! Prompts are available, or come prepared with a simple story or song to base your crankie on. Materials are provided, no artistic experience is necessary.
Explore the fundamentals of Contact Improvisation, an open-ended form of dance that embraces the kinesthetic possibilities of bodies moving through contact. Build skills through exploring principles of weight sharing, embodied listening, and collaborative movement. Each session will be organized into two parts. The first half of each session will focus on a particular skill or principle. The second half of the session will move into an open jam (with some guidance), in which participants are able to integrate what they've been learning. All levels of experience are welcome.

Eroding History tells the story of two Black communities on the Deal Island Peninsula that are losing their land and their history due to the intersection of historical racism and modern climate changes. Andre Chung, an in-demand news and portrait photographer who won the 2021 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for Domestic Photography, directed Eroding History. West Baltimore filmmaker and journalist Sean Yoes co-wrote and co-produced it, and longtime Chesapeake Bay chronicler Rona Kobell produced and also co-wrote it.

Two art forms COLLIDE for Baltimore City school students! Taking place on the Baltimore City Public Schools professional development days, these camps are chock-full of SPECTACULAR arts for students in grades 3-8. For half of the day, go Around the World with professional yoyo-er Abby Brodsky! Come learn the exciting, dynamic and fast-paced art of the yoyo—one of the World's oldest toys! In this workshop, Abby will teach you how to bring the yoyo up and down, walk the dog, rock the baby and more! Anyone can learn with just a little patience and practice! For the other half, join Baltimore Clayworks for a hands-on clay workshop. Learn basic clay terminology and hand-building skills to create form and texture, then leave with personal air-dry clay creations to take home and enjoy.

As we celebrate Pride Month in Baltimore, this edition of Mortified features adults sharing their childhood and adolescent diaries, poetry, locker notes, etc. exploring sexual and gender identity, coming out, and other LGBTQ stories.

Jóvenes en Acción is a Latin American folkloric dance and service- learning program serving youth ages 12 to 20. Led by dancers, choreographers, and educators from Monterrey, Mexico, participants will engage in an arts-based dance program with an emphasis on dances, steps, and routines that represent Latin American identity, culture, and heritage.
