Montreal-born Grenadian-Canadian Kaia Kater’s jazz-fueled voice and deft songcraft have garnered acclaim from NPR’s Tiny Desk, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, and No Depression. Through her artful banjo playing and lush songwriting, Kaia draws on influences rooted in Quebec, the Caribbean, and Appalachia, all of which reflect the diversity of her background; her ties to the Canadian folk music scene; her college years spent soaking up Appalachian music in West Virginia, her father’s experience growing up in Grenada, and her recent work in film composition. Joined by Black Assets, whose southern roots combined with her Baltimore Charm molded her into a powerhouse soul, funk, indie, rock songstress. Grenadian-Canadian Kaia Kater‘s jazz-fueled voice and deft songcraft have garnered acclaim from NPR’s Tiny Desk, Rolling Stone, and The Guardian. Her new album, Strange Medicine (May 2024), celebrates the power of women and oppressed people, while also sharing meditations on her own life. Kaia is equally recognized for her film work, winning a Canadian Screen Award for ‘The Porter’ (CBC/BET+), and contributing to the new film, My Dead Friend Zoe (March 2024) as a songwriter and singer.

Black Assets
Ashley Lakayla Yates, also known by the stage name Black Assets, is a dynamic vocalist/singer-songwriter from Itta Bena, Mississippi, whose art is committed to reflecting the experience of Black people in the United States. Black later moved to Baltimore, MD, where her music career blossomed. Her most recent single “Being Black” was an eloquent display of her talents. She wrote the lyrics, produced the song, and designed the cover art. She is also the creator of The Living Room Social (TLRS), a platform for musicians and music lovers in the Maryland area whose purpose is to make and experience music together in the name of love, peace, and light. For the past three years, TLRS has curated over 75 shows boasting loyal audiences of over 200 people per show. A natural leader, Black Assets music is directly rooted within her community and when she sings, she gives an on-fire performance!
