Capoeira Angola cultivates control of emotions, body, and mind. Capoeira Angola is a rigorous workout that resembles both martial arts and dance. It also develops a cultural philosophy—rich in music, community, and Afro-Brazilian ancestral connections. Capoeira Angola develops a dialogue between two bodies.
In class, students will learn and practice the basic movements of Capoeira, both solo and with partners, while following the teacher through movements and sequences. Students will also learn the songs of Capoeira and, through them, the Portuguese language and Afro-Brazilian history and culture. Students will sing as well as learn to play instruments such as berimbau, pandeiro, agogo, reco-reco, and atabaque as part of the class. Students should wear comfortable shoes, pants (no shorts), and loose-fitting t-shirts.
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of the class.
Note: The Creativity Center is now open! Classes will take place in the new Creativity Center at 3137 Eastern Ave., just across the street from The Patterson. Please check the website prior to your class to confirm location. We are excited to share our new space with you and hear your feedback!
Amidst the ongoing effects of COVID-19, we continue to prioritize the health and well-being of our staff, artists, youth, audiences, and our community. Masks are optional in both The Patterson & Creativity Center.
