Las Artesanas son un grupo de mujeres talentosas que viven en el sureste de Baltimore y son nativas de países latinoamericanos, como México, El Salvador y Ecuador, que honran su herencia latinoamericana demostrando, compartiendo y enseñando artesanías tradicionales.
Alondra Flores Merino is 39 years old and is of Mexican nationality. She is married and has 2 children. She has been participating in the Artesanas group for approximately 6 years. She is a stylist, and a teacher of folkloric dance, Zumba, exercise, and sports in after-school programs for children and youth. Alondra is the founder and teacher of the folkloric and modern dance group, Juventud Latina, where children, teens, and adults can participate. Also, she has a small independent business where she does traditional Mexican handmade crafts and more.

Maria del Carmen López was born in the beautiful country of Mexico. She worked for Creative Alliance for 10 years in the Artesanas program. Carmen has a beautiful family that, thank God, is growing a lot and every year there are more members. She likes to watch movies or listen to music in his spare time. Also, she loves to cook and learn new things.
Maria del Carmen López nació en el hermoso país de México. Tiene 10 años trabajando en Creative Alliance en el grupo de Artesanas. Carmen tiene una hermosa familia que gracias a Dios está creciendo mucho y cada año son más integrantes. En su tiempo libre le gusta ver películas o escuchar música. Tambien, le encanta cocinar y aprender nuevas cosas.
Cresenciana Leon is from Mexico, Guerrero. She is the mother of 3 children who support her in each of her projects. Cresenciana started as a volunteer at Creative Alliance making lanterns and was invited to be part of Artesanas, an educational program where Latin American women teach the community and schools the traditions of their country such as piñatas, papel picado, corn husk flowers, and much more.

Elsa Mohammed started in the entrepreneurial and empowered group of women artists from Artesanas 1 year ago. During her training to become a Master Artesana, she learned different forms of traditional art such as papel picado, corn husk flower, hand frayed flower, piñatas, paper-mâché artificial food and fruit, and many other skills. Now, she has the opportunity to be a Master Artesana in free workshops for the community.
Elsa Mohammed empezo en el grupo emprendedor y empoderado por mujeres artistas de Artesanas hace 1 año. Durante su entrenamiento para convertirse en una maestra Artesana, ella aprendio diferentes formas de arte tradicional como el papel picado, flor de totomoxtle, flor deshilada, piñatas, comida y fruta artesanal de papel maché, y muchas otras habilidades. Ahora, ella tiene la oportunidad de ser maestra Artesana en talleres gratuitos para la comunidad.

Fabiola Lopez was born in Mexico City. She finished high school and managed to graduate as a teacher’s assistant. She has a passion for serving her community so she has volunteered with the Nuestras Raíces group since 2008. Also, Fabiola was part of the Latino Committee from 2019-2022. She shares Mexican culture by showing her traditions, gastronomy, values, and language at community events.
Fabiola Lopez nació en la ciudad de Mexico. Ella termino la preparatoria y logro graduarse como asistente de maestra. Ella tiene una pasión por servir a su comunidad asi que hace trabajo voluntariado en el grupo de Nuestras Raíces desde el 2008. Tambien, Fabiola fue parte de el Comite Latino desde el 2019-2022. A ella le gusta compatir su cultura mexicana mostrando sus tradiciones, gastronomía, valores y lenguaje en eventos comunitarios.
Flor Gallegos has been an Artesana for 7 years. She came to Baltimore 19 years ago from the Federal District of Mexico City and is the mother of 5 wonderful children. Flor has taught cooking and art in after-school programs at Patterson Park Public Charter School and Tench Tilghman Elementary/Middle School. She has also participated in festivals, workshops, and annual events such as La Posada, Day of the Dead Parade and Festival, and A Special Day with Mama.
Flor is always ready to share her knowledge on how to make corn husk flowers, papel picado, and piñatas. Just as Flor likes to teach the community, she likes to learn new things from other artists. One of Flor’s goals is to participate in a corn husk flower craft exhibition.
Flor Gallegos ha sido Artesana desde hace 7 años. Ella llegó a Baltimore hace 19 años del Distrito Federal de la Ciudad de México y es madre de 5 maravillosos hijos. Flor ha sido maestra de cocina y arte en programas después de escuela en Patterson Park Public Charter School y Tench Tilghman Elementary/Middle School. Ella también ha participado en festivales, talleres, y eventos anuales como La Posada, Desfile y Festival del Dia de los Muertos, y Un Dia Especial con Mama.
Flor siempre está lista para compartir su conocimiento en como hacer las flores de totomoxtle, papel picado, y piñatas. Así como a Flor le gusta enseñarle a la comunidad, a ella le gusta aprender cosas nuevas de otros artistas. Una meta de Flor es participar en una exposición de artesanía de flor de totomoxtle.
Guadalupe Astudillo joined the Artesanas group in 2021. She came to Baltimore 11 years ago from Guerrero, Mexico. She is the mother of 2 beautiful children. Guadalupe worked as an assistant in workshops for the community teaching how to make altars, hand-frayed flowers, papel picado, and much more. Also, she has participated in Latin American annual events at Creative Alliance. She wants to continue learning and sharing her cultural knowledge with the community.

Laura Naula was born in Ecuador. She started in the Artesanas program in September 2016 making lanterns as a volunteer for the Great Halloween Lantern Parade in Patterson Park. Afterward, she volunteered her time in the piñata workshop for La Posada. Later, she started working in different libraries doing a workshop on corn husk flowers, piñatas, paper flowers, and banners and making altars for the Day of the Dead every year. She also brought decorations to different events and worked as an assistant in 2 schools in art and cooking classes.
Laura Naula nació en Ecuador. Empezó en el programa de Artesanas en septiembre del 2016 haciendo faroles como voluntaria para el Desfile de Faroles en el Parque Patterson. Después voluntario su tiempo en el taller de piñatas para La Posada. Luego, empezó a trabajar en diferentes librerías con taller de flores de hoja de maíz , piñatas, flores de papel, banderines, papel picado, y haciendo altares para el día de muertos cada año. También, trajo decoración en eventos anuales latinoamericanos en Creative Alliance y luego también trabajo de asistente en 2 escuelas en clases de arte y cocina.
Magdalena Gaspar is 39 years old, originally from Guerrero, Mexico. She loves helping the community in different ways, Magdalena is an ambassador for health. She likes to volunteer in different institutions where they contribute positive things to the community. Her family supports each of her projects and always encourages her to undertake new ideas with determination and passion.
She joined the Artesanas program in 2016. She started volunteering at the Lantern Parade Workshop in Patterson Park. Later, she was an Artesana apprentice in art and now she is a teacher of piñatas, totomoxtle flowers, papel picado, artificial fruit, paper flowers, etc. Also, she has participated in community events such as La Posada, Día de los Muertos, and Altares. In addition, Magdalena has taught traditional art in schools, libraries, universities, and events. Her goal is to be a cooking teacher because she loves to cook and share the gastronomy of Mexico.

Le gusta ser voluntaria en diferentes instituciones donde aporten cosas positivas a la comunidad. Su familia apoya cada uno de sus proyectos y siempre la anima a emprender nuevas ideas con determinación y pasión.
Entro en el programa de Artesanas en el 2016. Comenzó como voluntaria en el taller de faroles del Desfile de Faroles en el Parque Patterson. Después, fue Artesana aprendiz de arte y ahora es maestra de piñatas, flor de totomoxtle, papel picado, fruta artificial ,flor de papel, ect. También, ella a participado en eventos de la comunidad como La Posada, Día de los Muertos, y Altares. Además, Magdalena ha enseñado arte tradicional en escuelas, bibliotecas, universidades y eventos. Su meta es ser maestra de cocina porque le encanta cocinar y compartir la gastronomia de Mexico.
Nayeli Moratin is from Mexico and now lives in Baltimore. She participates in Artesanas and likes their culture and learning new things. Nayeli is a teacher, assistant, and volunteer in the Artesana program. His favorite event is La Posada for the diversity of Latin American food and music.

Rosario Garcia joined the Artesanas group in 2016. She started as a volunteer and little by little she had the experience of making different types of handmade crafts. On multiple occasions, Rosario participated as a volunteer helping to teach in different schools until receiving the opportunity to teach in workshops, festivals, libraries, universities, and different programs in Creative Alliance such as Artesanitos, Jóvenes en Acción, and Kerplunk.
Rosario Garcia se unió al grupo de Artesanas desde el 2016. Ella empezo como voluntaria y poco a poco fue teniendo la experiencia de hacer diferentes tipos de artesanías hechas a mano. En multiples ocasiones, Rosario participó como voluntaria ayudando a dar clases en diferentes escuelas hasta recibir la oportunidad de poder dar clases en talleres, festivales, bibliotecas, universidades y diferentes programas en Creative Alliance como Artesanitos, Jóvenes en Acción, y Kerplunk.
Rosalva Matias Carrillo was born in Nayarit, Mexico. She studied tourism and product development at the Universidad Tecnologica de la Sierra in Mexico. Now, she is pursuing her programming degree. Rosalva proudly represents her indigenous “Wixarika” Huichol roots wherever she goes. For generations in her family, it has been passed down how to make Shakira stones jewelry, embroidery, yarn paintings, and the handcrafted “ojo de dios.” Rosalva’s interest is to give workshops to youth and children who want to learn more about Huichol art and culture.

My name is Alexandra Gonzalez and I am originally from Puebla, Mexico. I feel very proud of my Latinx roots. Because of this, I dedicate myself to sharing with and teaching others my culture and traditions through folkloric dance and visual arts. I especially love to teach young Latinx people who were born in the USA but have Hispanic heritage. One day, these young folks will feel just as proud of their Latin origins as I feel of mine. As an independent artist, I make beautiful jewelry made of avocado pits. I intend to plant my Latin American seed in my community to cultivate new leaders.

I’m a native Mexican woman that loves her culture, art, and traditions. I have been part of the Artesanas for five years as a piñata master. Teaching and preserving my culture and traditions are important to me so that new generations will not lose their roots. Teaching and sharing my love for cooking traditional Mexican food and making traditional crafts such as sugar skulls are my way of maintaining tradition and passing along my Latin heritage.
Soy una mujer nativa Mexicana que ama su cultura, arte, y tradicion. Desde hace 5 años soy parte de Artesanas como una instructora de piñatas. Enseñar y preservar mi cultura y tradiciones es importante para mi para que nuevas generación no pierdan sus raíces Mexicanas. Enseñar y compartir mi amor por la cocina tradicional Mexicana y artes manuales como calaveras de azúcar es mi manera de preservar las tradiciones y pasar mi herencia Latina.

My name is Lilia Tores and I am 43 years old. I have lived in Baltimore for 22 years. I have been a part of the Artesanas for 6 years. When I joined this group I started giving classes on how to make piñatas, then I had the opportunity to teach how to make paper flowers and papel picado. Additionally, I had the great opportunity to take the leadership of the preparation of the altars for Day of the Dead. Currently, I’m teaching in-school cooking classes to fourth and eighth graders. I’m also a teacher’s assitent. Truly, I love to teach people what I do. I consider myself a hardworking, enterprising, humble, and simple woman with a lot of desire to move forward.
I am a mother of 6 between the ages of 15-28 years. My husband Mauricio supports me and is always ready to help me with my projects and what I love to do.
Mi nombre es Lilia Torres, tengo 43 años. Vivo en Baltimore, MD hace 22 años. Soy parte de las Artesanas desde hace 6 años. Cuando me formé parte del grupo empecé por dar clases de cómo fabricar las piñatas. Luego, tuve la oportunidad de enseñar cómo hacer flores de papel y papel picado. Además, tuve la gran oportunidad de tomar liderazgo en la preparación de los altares del Día de los Muertos. Actualmente, enseño clases de cocina en una escuela a niños de cuarto y octavo grado. Soy también una maestra asistente. Realmente, disfruto mucho enseñar a las personas lo que yo sé hacer. Me considero como una mujer trabajadora, empresarial, humilde y sencilla con mucho deseo de seguir adelante.

I have learned arts and handiwork in order to share my abilities and the folklore of my country. I am from the center of Mexico. I dedicate my time to the making of piñatas and paper and corn-husk (totomoxtle) flowers. Additionally, I share my art in the making of artificial food to exhibit our folklore on the Day of the Dead. More than anything, my passion is to cook. I work hard to make sure my food is a joy to my guests and always highlighting my Mexican culture. I am very proud to be an Artesana and I demonstrate it day-to-day by speaking Spanish and, when I can, by wearing the traditional clothes of my country.
Mi destreza y manualidades son adquiridas para compartir mis habilidades y perpetuar el folklor de mi país. Soy del centro de México. Me desempeño en la elaboración de piñatas y flores de papel y Totomoxtle. También, he compartido mi arte en elaboración de comida artificial para exponer nuestro folklore en el Día de los Muertos. Más que todo, mi pasión es cocinar. Me esfuerzo en que mi comida sea al agrado de los comensales y siempre apoyándome a mi cultura mexicana. My name is Nuvia Patzy Gonzalez Perez. I am from Morelos, Atlatlahucan, Mexico. I started working with the Artesanas about 3 years ago. I love art because it has helped me improve my skills and share my traditions and culture to diverse peoples, so that they can learn a little bit about my heritage and what I do.
Mi nombre es Nuvia Patzy Gonzalez Perez, originaria del Estado de Morelos de un pueblo llamado Atlatlahucan Morelos. Comencé a trabajar en Artesanas alrededor de hace 3 años. Me encanta el arte porque me ayudó a poder desarrollar y transmitir nuestras tradiciones y culturas a diversidad de personas, para que conozcan un poco de lo que hago y aprenden de mis antepasados.
My specialty in art is the making of piñatas. I seek to pass on traditions, customs, and history to my children. I teach them how to make piñatas, I show them videos, and I tell them what life is like in my country. With this I hope they feel proud of their origins and that they convey the beauty of Mexico. I feel very proud of being Mexican because every city and town has a host of traditions; we always seek to preserve our originality and identity.
Mi especialidad es la elaboración de piñatas. Me dedico en transmitir las tradiciones, costumbres, y historia a mis hijos. Les enseño cómo elaborar piñatas, les muestro videos, y les cuento cómo es la vida en mi pais. Con esto quiero que se sientan orgullosos de su origén y que compartan la belleza de Mexico. Me siento muy orgullasa de ser mexicana porque cada ciudad y pueblo tiene una diversidad de traditions; siempre tenemos que preservar nuestra originalidad y identidad.
