Creative Alliance’s Charm City LGBT Film Festival Committee has meticulously selected six award winning films that have premiered at the most renowned national and international LGBT film festivals and we’ve planned more great events all weekend to highlight LGBT themes in film, art, spoken word, comedy and much more! Here’s the line-up for the week!

Join us in the Marquee Lounge for an intimate reading and signing with esteemed author Craig Stewart who will read from his ground breaking memoir Words Never Spoken, which is is a funny, poignant and deeply moving story that looks beyond societal stereotypes.

Director: Liam K. Sullivan
Transgender comedian, and favorite of comedian Margaret Cho, Ian Harvie is the focus of this hilarious yet self-aware 2013 documentary. Filled with clips of Ian’s stage shows (and his inclusive, relatable humor), he explores everything from acquiring male privilege to navigating gendered bathroom politics.
Keith Thirion, Director of Advocacy and Programming at Equality Maryland, introduces the film.

Valencia is a collaboration between a national community of 20 queer filmmakers to adapt the underground classic memoir into a kaleidoscopic vision of San Francisco’s Mission District in the early ’90s. Adult content.Jennifer Williams, Assistant Professor of English and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Morgan State University, and KJ Mohr, Founder of the Charm City LGBT Film Festival, will be introducing the film (Valencia) and be available for a Q&A afterwards.

Gallery Talk w/ Organism’s Jeffrey L. Gangwisch & Douglas Johnson | 2:30pm
Working in two different mediums, painter Douglas Johnson and filmmaker Jeffrey L. Gangwisch both discover a sense of peace and place in their first collaboration, Organism. On view at the Creative Alliance at The Patterson from May 10 – June 7, Organism explores the bonds between human and animal, spirit and body, myth and reality.
GORE VIDAL: THE UNITED STATES OF AMNESIA | 4pm

No 20th century figure has had a more profound effect on literature, film, politics, historical debate, and the culture wars than Gore Vidal. Anchored by intimate one-on-one interviews with the man himself, this film is a fascinating and wholly entertaining portrait of the last lion of the age of American liberalism.
Kate Drabinski, Lecturer, Gender and Women’s Studies and Director, WILL Program University of Maryland, Baltimore County introduces the film and is available for a Q&A afterwards.

Marc’s life seems to be right on track with a promising career and a baby on the way when he meets fellow policeman Kay, and during their regular jogs experiences what it means to fall in love with another man. Suddenly, his life is in free fall and he realizes that try as he may, he can’t make everyone happy – least of all, himself.

FIRE IN THE BLOOD | 4pm
Director: Dylan Mohan Gray, India, 2013, 87 mins.
An intricate tale of “medicine, monopoly and malice,” this film tells the story of how Western pharmaceutical companies and governments aggressively blocked access to affordable AIDS drugs for the countries of Africa and the global south in the years after 1996 – causing 10 million or more unnecessary deaths.
Tonia Poteat has been involved in the fight against AIDS since 1989 when she first volunteered with an AIDS service organization in New Haven. In 1996, she completed Emory University’s Physician Assistant program and began providing medical care for people living with HIV. She is certified by the American Academy of HIV Medicine as an HIV Specialist and holds a PhD in International Health from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. She has provided technical support to HIV programs in Africa since 2004 and currently works with the Office of the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator as the Senior Advisor on Key Populations. She will be introducing Fire in the Blood and will be available for a Q&A afterwards.
