Marquee Ball Fun Facts:
• Marquee Ball themes have included classics such as Ben-Hur, Viva Las Vegas, Million Dollar Mermaid, Greatest Show on Earth, Forbidden Planet, Goldfinger, Moulin Rouge, Back to the Future, Alice in Wonderland, Kiss me Deadly, and Road to Rio
• Fred Lazarus, former President of Maryland Institute College of Art, came to the Marquee Ball in scuba gear in 2006
• After the first Marquee Ball, the Creative Alliance staff found underwear in the building – proving that the party was a rip roaring success!
• Patterson Park was the location for Creative Alliance’s Alice in Wonderland Marquee Ball. City Paper photographer Joe Giordano took the promotional photos and Jill Andrews and her crew styled the shoot. Creative Alliance’s resident artist, Alessandra Torres, posed as Alice.

History of the Marquee Ball:
On Saturday, June 5, 2004, Creative Alliance pulled out all the stops to inaugurate the newly renovated historic Patterson Theater. Spotlights greeted guests who were ushered inside the building by impersonators of U.S. presidents. During the cocktail hour, 800 guests, including a combination of artists, art lovers, politicians, and business owners viewed the inaugural art exhibition titled “Trash to Treasure: the Production Design of Vince Peranio.” From there, the guests moved into the theater for dinner and a performance by Joyce J. Scott and Lorraine L. Whittlesey. The theater walls were lacquered in red and black and Chinese lanterns hung from the ceiling. Dr. Seuss-come-to-life centerpieces with roses, green calla lilies, orchids, and an assortment of wondrous greenery were on the tables.

The theme of the first Marquee Ball was based on the film Ben-Hur. Guests prepared themselves for an unbridled spectacle that rivaled a neo Roman Hollywood epic! The celebration took place with great fervor and even included a chariot race re-enactment in the Main Gallery. With great flourish, Leslie King Hammond, Graduate Dean Emeritus, Maryland Institute College of Art, presented the 1st Golden Formstone Award to artist Joyce J. Scott for her “Formi-dable contributions to Baltimore through the Arts.” The guests, dressed like silent film stars, danced like Egyptians and drank like Romans.

Thanks to the support of our generous donors, sponsors, and board, the Marquee Ball fundraiser continues to support Creative Alliance’s free youth education programs.
