Why do we not inquire about our interactions with Indigenous people in art spaces? Why are indigenous individuals, tribes, and communities presented as lost civilizations instead of present on this land? The salon-style exhibition showcases craft, photography, illustration, performance, and other mediums that are beyond the preconceived notions of our production in Indigenous and native contexts.

WORKSHOP

Arte en Estambre
Experience the therapeutic nature of art and meditation in this yarn-painting workshop with former Creative Alliance’s Resident Artist Francisco Loza and Marcario Carrillo. Traditional Huichol or Wixáritari yarn paintings of the Sierra Madres Mountains in Central Mexico are sacred and symbolic, depicting ancient beliefs. Loza shares intimate Huichol stories while teaching the technique of this art form – mixing beeswax with pine resin, into which colorful threads of yarn are pressed into wood (or your own object of choice). Geared to adults, youth 12+ welcome.

Spirit, People, Connections: An Evening of Ceremony from Around the World

Join us in the Marquee Lounge for a heartfelt evening of spiritual connection ceremonies from around the world! Visiting indigenous Huichol Mexican shaman, Marcario Carrillo, spearheads the evening by leading a special cleansing ceremony in his unique tradition. He is joined by Creative Alliance Resident Artist MJ Neuberger, sharing insights into indigenous Filipino practice and leading a grounding practice, and Yoruba Priestess Iya Keturah, who leads a traditional West African libation ceremony and appeals to our collective ancestors. The ceremonies are followed by a Q&A panel and a gallery tour with Visual Arts Director Joy Davis of the «We Are Present» exhibition featuring indigenous artists from what is currently considered Maryland, Delaware, and DC Metro Areas. This special evening of multicultural connection is not to be missed!
