Bio: My name is Alejandra, I am from Mexico. I have been a piñata instructor for 5 years. I love sharing my culture and traditions through culinary arts and teaching folks about my traditions, like the Day of the Dead. 

Mi nombre es Alejandra y soy de Mexico. Tengo 5 años como maestra de piñatas. Me encanta compartir mi cultura y tradiciones por medio del arte culinario y enseñando acerca de mis tradiciones, tal como día de muertos.

I’m a native Mexican woman that loves her culture, art, and traditions. I have been part of the Artesanas for five years as a piñata master. Teaching and preserving my culture and traditions are important to me so that new generations will not lose their roots. Teaching and sharing my love for cooking traditional Mexican food and making traditional crafts such as sugar skulls are my way of maintaining tradition and passing along my Latin heritage.

Soy una mujer nativa Mexicana que ama su cultura, arte, y tradicion. Desde hace 5 años soy parte de Artesanas como una instructora de piñatas. Enseñar y preservar mi cultura y tradiciones es importante para mi para que nuevas generación no pierdan sus raíces Mexicanas. Enseñar y compartir mi amor por la cocina tradicional Mexicana y artes manuales como calaveras de azúcar es mi manera de preservar las tradiciones y pasar mi herencia Latina.

Alexandra Gonzalez

Bio: My name is Alexandra Gonzalez and I am originally from Puebla, Mexico. I feel very proud of my Latinx roots. Because of this, I dedicate myself to sharing with and teaching others my culture and traditions through folkloric dance and visual arts. I especially love to teach young Latinx people who were born in the USA but have Hispanic heritage. One day, these young folks will feel just as proud of their Latin origins as I feel of mine. Furthermore, as an independent artist, I make beautiful jewelry made of avocado pits. I intend to plant my Latin American seed in my community to cultivate new leaders.

Mi nombre es Alexandra Gonzalez, soy originaria de Puebla, México. Me siento muy orgullosa de mis raíces Latinas y por eso me dedico a compartir y enseñar, a través del baile folclórico y artes visuals, mi cultura y tradiciones a otras personas y nuevas generaciones de jóvenes que nacieron en Estado Unidos pero tienen padres Hispanos. Un día estos jóvenes se sentirán orgullosos de sus orígenes Latinos y su identidad así como yo lo estoy de la mía. Además, como una artista independiente, creo hermosa joyería del corazón del aguacate. Quiero sembrar mi semilla latinoamericana en mi comunidad para entrenar líderes nuevos.

Alondra Grisel Flores

Bio: My name is Alondra Flores Merino. I am 37 years old and I am Mexican. I am married and am a mother of 2 sons. I live in Baltimore, Maryland. 

Mi nombre es Alondra Flores Merino. Tengo 37 años y soy Mexicana. Soy casada y tengo 2 hijos. Vivo en Baltimore, Maryland. 

Enseño a todos, de 4 años hasta adultos, baile moderno y folclórico, Zumba, deportes, y ejercicio físico. Soy también una estilista Unisex y trabajo con las mismas edades.

I teach everyone, from four year olds to adults,  modern and folkloric dance, as well as Zumba, sports, and physical exercises. I am also a Unisex hair stylist that works with all ages.

Fabiola Lopez

Bio: My name is Fabiola and I am from Mexico, Distrito Federal. I am an artisan. I like to share my culture. I love working with the community, and I have been a volunteer with Comite Latino since 2017 and Mis Raices in PPPCS since 2009.. 

Mi nombre es Fabiola López y soy de México Distrito Feder. Hago artesanía. Me gusta compartir mi cultura. Me fascina involucrarme en la comunidad, pertenezco al Comité Latino desde el 2017 y  A mis raíces en la escuela PPPCS del 2009 como voluntaria.

I create Piñatas, Paper Flowers, Totomoxtle Flowers, and Papel Picado. I am a culinary teacher and Spanish teacher. I volunteer to teach children between the ages of 3-6 years the basics of the Spanish language such as colors, alphabet, numbers, and more at PPPC during the summer. 

Elaboro piñatas, flores de papel, flores de totomoxtle, y papel picado. Soy una maestra de cocina y también doy clases de Español voluntariamente a niños de 3-6 años, donde enseño lo básico del idioma, como los colores, el abecedario, los números, etc. en la escuela PPPCS en el verano. 

 

Flor Gallegos

Bio: My name is Flor Gallegos, I am from Mexico, and I have been a member of the Artesanas Mexicanas group for 5 years. I am a part of this group because I love sharing my culture, traditional crafts, and traditions to our new generations. I like to cook and teach how to cook typical traditional Mexican dishes. 

Me llamo Flor Gallegos, soy de México, y pertenezco al grupo de Artesanas Mexicanas ya por 5 años. Estoy en el grupo porque me gusta compartir mi cultura, artesanías y tradiciones para que no se pierdan en nuestras nuevas generaciones. Me gusta cocinar y me gusta enseñar como hacer platillos típicos y tradicionales de México. 

I like to teach and share my Mexican art forms and traditions along with their history and celebrations like the Day of the Dead, Posadas, Pinatas, Paper Flowers, Totomoxtle Flowers, and Papel Picado. 

Me gusta enseñar y compartir mi arte y tradiciones mexicanas con sus historias y celebraciones como Día de los Muertos, posadas , piñatas ,flores de papel ,flores de Totomoxtle y papel picado.

Bio: My name is Lilia Tores and I am 43 years old. I have lived in Baltimore for 22 years. I have been a part of the Artesanas for 6 years. When I joined this group I started giving classes on how to make piñatas, then I had the opportunity to teach how to make paper flowers and papel picado. Additionally, I had the great opportunity to take the leadership of the preparation of the altars for Day of the Dead. Currently, I’m teaching in-school cooking classes to fourth and eighth graders. I’m also a teacher’s assitent. Truly, I love to teach people what I do. I consider myself a hardworking, enterprising, humble and simple woman with a lot of desire to move forward. 

​I am a mother of 6 between the ages of 15-28 years. My husband Mauricio supports me and is always ready to help me with my projects and what I love to do.

Mi nombre es Lilia Torres, tengo 43 años. Vivo en Baltimore, MD hace 22 años. Soy parte de las Artesanas desde hace 6 años. Cuando me formé parte del grupo empecé por dar clases de cómo fabricar las piñatas. Luego, tuve la oportunidad de enseñar cómo hacer flores de papel y papel picado. Además, tuve la gran oportunidad de tomar liderazgo en la preparación de los altares del Día de los Muertos. Actualmente, enseño clases de cocina en una escuela a niños de cuarto y octavo grado. Soy también una maestra asistente. Realmente, disfruto mucho enseñar a las personas lo que yo sé hacer. Me considero como una mujer trabajadora, empresarial, humilde y sencilla con mucho deseo de seguir adelante. 

Soy la madre de 6 hijos de años 15-28. Mi esposo Mauricio  es mi apoyo y siempre está listo para ayudarme en todos mis proyectos y lo que amo hacer.

Nayeli Moratin

Bio: My name is Nayeli Moratin and I was born in Mexico. I have three children and I live in Baltimore. I have two children who are part of the Artesanitos group. They love learning about the Mexican culture. My culture has many beautiful things like dance, food and, above all, the art that Mexico offers to the world. It is very important to continue with these traditions so that they do not get lost. Thanks to the Artesanas group, I have learned a lot and I can proudly say that I make papel picado, piñatas, corn leaf flowers, tissue paper flowers, artificial food and all kinds of decorations.

Mi nombre es Nayeli Moratín y naci en Mexico. Tengo tres hijos y vivo en Baltimore. Dos de mis hijos son miembros del grupo de Artesanitos. Ellos aman aprender sobre la cultura Mexicana. Mi cultura tiene muchas cosas hermosas como la danza, comida, y sobre todo, el arte que México le ofrece a el mundo. Es muy importante continuar con estas tradiciones para que no se pierdan. Gracias al grupo de las Artesanas, aprendí cómo hacer manualidades y me siento orgullosa de decir que puedo hacer papel picado, piñatas, flores de hojas de papel, flores chinas de papel, comida artificial, y varios tipos de decoraciones.

Bio: My name is Nuvia Patzy Gonzalez Perez. I am from Morelos, Atlatlahucan, Mexico. I started working with the Artesanas about 3 years ago. I love art because it has helped me improve my skills and share my traditions and culture to diverse peoples, so that they can learn a little bit about my heritage and what I do.

Mi nombre es Nuvia Patzy Gonzalez Perez, originaria del Estado de Morelos de un pueblo llamado Atlatlahucan Morelos. Comencé a trabajar en Artesanas alrededor de hace 3 años. Me encanta el arte porque me ayudó a poder desarrollar y transmitir nuestras tradiciones y culturas a diversidad de personas, para que conozcan un poco de lo que hago y aprenden de mis antepasados. 

My specialty in art is the making of piñatas. I seek to transmit the traditions, customs and history to my children. I teach them how to make piñatas, I show them videos, and I tell them what life is like in my country. With this I hope they feel proud of their origin and that they convey the beauty of Mexico. I feel very proud of being Mexican because every city and town has a host of traditions; we always have to preserve our originality and identity.

Mi especialidad es la elaboración de piñatas. Me dedico en transmitir las tradiciones, costumbres, y historia a mis hijos. Les enseño cómo elaborar piñatas, les muestro videos, y les cuento cómo es la vida en mi pais. Con esto quiero que se sientan orgullosos de su origén y que compartan la belleza de Mexico. Me siento muy orgullasa de ser mexicana porque cada ciudad y pueblo tiene una diversidad de traditions; siempre tenemos que preservar nuestra originalidad y identidad.

Maria del Rocio Herrera

Bio: I have learned manual arts and handiwork in order to share my abilities and perpetuate the Folklore of my country. I am from the center of Mexico. I dedicate my time to the making of piñatas and paper and corn-husk (Totomoxtle) flowers. Additionally, I share my art in the making of artificial food to exhibit our folklore on the Day of the Dead. More than anything, my passion is to cook. I work hard to make sure my food is a joy to my guests and always highlighting my Mexican culture. I am very proud to be an Artesana and I demonstrate it day to day by speaking Spanish and, when I can, by wearing the traditional clothes of my country. 

Mi destreza y manualidades son adquiridas para compartir mis habilidades y perpetuar el folklor de mi país. Soy del centro de México. Me desempeño en la elaboración de piñatas y flores de papel y Totomoxtle. También, he compartido mi arte en elaboración de comida artificial para exponer nuestro folklore en el Día de los Muertos. Más que todo, mi pasión es cocinar. Me esfuerzo en que mi comida sea al agrado de los comensales y siempre apoyándome a mi cultura mexicana. Soy muy orgullosa de ser Artesana y lo demuestro día a día a través de hablar español y, cuando puedo, con la vestimenta típica de mi país. 

 

Rosario Silva

Bio: I have learned how to make traditional art at Creative Alliance such as pinatas, papel picado, corn husk flowers, and paper flowers. I have been trained and evaluated about the job I do. In addition, I’ve had many opportunities to work as a traditional art instructor with children and teens to share my beautiful mexican crafts, so that we don’t lose our lovely Mexican artisanship. 

He aprendido en Creative Alliance cómo hacer varias artesanías como piñatas, papel picado, flores de hoja de maíz, y flores de papel. He recibido un entrenamiento y evaluación de mi trabajo. También, he tenido varias oportunidades de trabajar en escuelas por eseñar a los niños  y jóvenes estas maravillosas artesanías mexicanas, para que no se pierda esta hermosa artesanía mexicana. 

Art Forms: Star-shaped pinatas with 7 cones. The original traditional mexican pinata is made of pot mud and is filled with fruit and candies. While breaking the pinata, people sign the “Dale Dale” traditional song. 

Artesanías: Piñatas de 7 picos en forma de estrella. La piñata tradicional mexicana la original es elaborada de olla de barro , se rellena de fruta o dulces. Hay una canción tradicional que se canta al quebrar la piñata que se llama “Dale Dale”.
