Jani Hileman returns to Creative Alliance with the exhibition "Jani Hileman: Live Sculpting In Baltimore" co-curated by Visual Arts Director Joy Davis. Hileman was engaged in a three-year project during her residency at Creative Alliance (2018-2021) to document the Baltimore music scene by sculpting ceramic portraits of musicians during live performances. The project will be shown at Creative Alliance in 2022. The exhibition runs from September 2nd to October 2nd.
If you want to check out Hileman's live-sculpting techniques please join us as she sculpts a member of Ari and the Buffalo Kings August 19th!
Jani Hileman is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice navigates sculpture, storytelling, and performance. Her work is often made with hands-on, labor-intensive processes that allow the materials to influence the final aesthetic of each of her projects. Jani draws inspiration from process, materials, landscapes, feminism, environmentalism, and stories. Hileman explores the body, craft, everyday, and the nature of objects through her works.
Jani has shown work throughout the mid-Atlantic region, having participated in group shows such as On The Verge at Creative Alliance and Baltimore Clayworks’ 40th-anniversary show Past, Present, and Future. She recently had two solo exhibitions, Flesh Is Earth, and Home & Hearth. Her third solo endeavor, Terra Firma, was part of The Maryland Institute College of Art's ArtWalk event in May 2018. She will show her current residency project at Creative Alliance’s Main Gallery in 2022. From Lancaster, Pennsylvania, she completed her BFA at The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2018 and is currently based in Star, NC as a resident artist at StarWorks Ceramics.
