Creative Alliance’s Annual Resident Artist Exhibition
Curated by Sheena Morrison
“It’s a writer’s duty to write about human differences, all human differences, and help make them acceptable,” said science fiction author Octavia Butler during a 2001 interview. Her statement could not be more relevant today. The realization of more equitable personal and collective social relations rests squarely on our ability to honor such stories as they are the building blocks of a shared humanity.
There is an interesting parallel between contemporary art and sci-fiction in that they are both ideology-bending genres notable for their register of sociality in the broadest frames imaginable—from the aesthetic to the ignoble.
The Notable letter Hh is a multidisciplinary group exhibition that brings together the work of eight resident artists at the Creative Alliance who with candor, thoughtfulness, and humor reflect upon the diversity of our lived experiences.
Each artist was asked to choose a word that begins with the letter Hh that could speak to themes of humanity in their own artwork. Despite the singularity that informs their individual practices the works on exhibit traverse the boundaries of identity and community inviting viewers to consider mutually symbiotic ways of inhabiting our planet.
The exhibition closes the same day as our Annual Resident Artists’ open house.
