There are at least two dynamic bandleaders born in Freehold, NJ. One leads The E Street Band; the other is Joe Keyes. Keyes and Bruce Springsteen grew up blocks away from each other, but the band leaders’ musical paths went in very different directions. As a precocious teenager Joe Keyes became one of New Jersey’s first modern DJs by spinning deep cuts by funk pioneers, eventually leading him to the pre-disco and proto-club music atmosphere where legendary DJs like Larry Levan were at the center. Today, the music Joe makes with his large ensemble reflects this musical upbringing with influences ranging from New Jersey church ministers to avant-garde jazz artists like Sun Ra, black rockers like Jimi Hendrix and Funkadelic to the socially conscious proto-hip-hop of The Last Poets and Gil-Scott Heron. Join us as Joe walks us through his musical journey.
