9th Black History Month Student Competition

Baltimore City Public Schools in the East Baltimore community are invited to submit individual or group projects that represent their schools’ celebration of Black History Leaders!

The ninth annual Black History Month Student Competition is presented by Johns Hopkins East Baltimore Community Affairs and Creative Alliance. The exhibition, youth performances and reception give local youth a forum to showcase their artistic talents and honor black men and women who have made significant contributions to society and made historical accomplishments from Baltimore and around the world! Young people, families, community members and others will experience work at the Creative Alliance’s Amalie Rothschild Gallery on view from February 23 to March 9, 2019. 3134 Eastern Ave, Baltimore, MD 21224

Galleries are always free and open to the public Tuesdays thru Saturdays from 11am to 7pm.

OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, February 23, 1-3PM

Exhibition! Youth performances! DJ! Food! Vote for your favorite work of art for People’s Choice Award.

Prizes:

1st place- $1000

2nd place- $500

3rd place- $250

Honorable Mention- $100

People’s Choice Award- $250

The Basics:

Here is the basic, need-to-know information.

  1. Fill out this form and send your submission by February 20.
  2. Representatives from the Creative Alliance and Johns Hopkins will jury your work and evaluate it based on these submission guidelines.
  3. Awards will be announced at the opening on February 23.
  4. Your students’ work will be displayed at the Creative Alliance at the Patterson from Saturday, February 23 through Saturday, March 9, with an opening event on Saturday February 23, 2019, 1-3PM
  5. Images of your students’ work may be included in future advertising or media publications to promote the exhibition.
  6. Emphasis is placed on Black History and African Diaspora all around the world.

Accepted Media Includes:

  • Paintings/Drawings/Collage
  • Photography (digital, black & white, color)
  • Audio/Video (animation, documentary, narrative, radio)*
  • Graphic Art (drawing, painting, computer graphics, etc.)
  • 3D (papier-mâché, sculpture, quilting, etc.)
  • Written (poetry, script, spoken word, comedy)

Digital files will be accepted on a flashdrive. Please give Creative Alliance advanced notice of digital work entries.

 

Submission Guidelines:

  • Please submit original work. One entry per school please!
  • Content: All artwork must be made by students in Pre-K to 12th grades and recognize the theme.
  • Quality: Work must have a basic standard of technical proficiency: audio must be loud and clear enough to hear; video must be bright and steady enough to see.  Please do not submit copyrighted materials.
  • Size and Duration Requirements: Entries are not limited in size.  Larger artwork will be displayed only if gallery space permits.
  • Audio/Video: Entries are limited to 8 minutes.  Please submit links to video or audio files or DVDs.

Notification & Prizes:

By March 25, 2018 all award winners will have received notification via email of prizes winnings.  After work has been displayed at the Creative Alliance, artwork will be returned to participating schools and groups along with winnings.

  • All artists will have the opportunity to present their work during the opening reception at the Creative Alliance at the Patterson on Saturday, February 23.
