In Jonathan’s words:
“The Creative Alliance has been more than a venue to me—it has been a sanctuary, a forge, a proving ground. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of performing on its stage for New Year’s Eve celebrations, Marquee Balls, and countless community events. For a time, The Patterson was not just where I performed, it was home.”
Jonathan Gilmore is an award-winning vocalist, writer, director, and genre-defying performer whose work lives at the crossroads of music, theater, and liberation. He is the first-ever Artist-in-Residence at Baltimore’s Voxel Theater, and serves as the director and visionary force behind Funktopia—an original Afro-opera blending Afrofuturism, Black ancestral storytelling, and live performance.
Gilmore leads two musical collectives—The Experience and The Jonathan Gilmore Project—each known for immersive shows that move fluidly through soul, funk, rock, and experimental soundscapes. His acclaimed piece Rock Opera 101, created in partnership with the Baltimore Rock Opera Society, was filmed locally and later presented by the Kennedy Center.
As a Black man standing in spaces where artists like him were once denied, Jonathan’s work is both reclamation and revolution. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, he is driven by a deep commitment to telling urgent stories, building communal joy, and forging the future through sound and spirit.
