Bharatnatyam is one of the oldest dance forms in India and the root of Indian dance. Bharatanatyam weaves emotions, “Bhava”, with complex footwork, “Nritta”, to depict our cultural stories through dance, “Natya.” The form has a rich tradition of narrative elements that are intertwined in different aspects of our performances. Abhinaya is the art of expression in Bharatanatyam. It involves facial expressions, eye movements, and body language to portray the emotions and narrative of a dance piece. Through abhinaya, dancers bring characters and their stories to life, evoking a range of emotions in the audience.

About JHU SHAKTI
Shakti is the competitive Indian Classical Dance team at Johns Hopkins University. Since 2003, the dancers of JHU Shakti have excelled on stage, telling stories through dance while holding dear the value of classical Indian culture. Marking a powerful return to the intercollegiate circuit post-COVID, JHU Shakti’s journey has been one of profound and remarkable growth—rising from humble beginnings with renewed energy, shaped by passion, precision, and purpose, to ultimately earn national recognition and success across multiple competitions.
The team dedicates their time to the mastery of expression, hand movements, and footwork, and seeks to convey a powerful cultural-rooted story through classical dance to all audiences. The members of Shakti each bring a variety of classical dance styles to the team and meld them into dynamic performances featuring traditional steps set to fast-tempo beats, complex formations, and moving narratives.
As we are based in Baltimore, Maryland, we seek to extend our presence as a South Indian dance team to the greater Baltimore community. Baltimore has a rich cultural history of emphasizing expression through art. However, there remains limited knowledge of South Asian culture. We want to showcase our cultural background to the local community, and classical Indian dance is a creative avenue that can teach all ages of people about our culture in an engaging and enjoyable manner.
