Creative Alliance Celebrates Black History

Creative Alliance honors the diversity, complexity, and beauty of Black artist experiences. We’re not stopping at February… this celebration goes through March!

FEB 1 | FILM & DISCUSSION | THE MAN
An African-American senator (played by James Earl Jones) becomes the deginated survivor of an accident that kills the President of the United States. Now the first black President, he attempts to end bigotry. More Info & Tix 

FEB 3 | BOB MARLEY’S BIRTHDAY SOUL SHAKEDOWN PARTY W/ Strykers’ Posse, Jahiti & Papa WaBe
Our annual dance party celebrating Bob! This year, we bring in the beloved, powerful ladies of Strykers’ Posse to headline a night of Bob Marley tunes in honor of his words, music, and spirit. Also in the musical mix for the night is Jahiti and Papa Wabe! Food from Sweet Home Jamaica will be available for purchase so come hungry. More Info & Tix

FEB 24 – MAR 10 | EXHIBITION | JOHNS HOPKINS BLACK HISTORY MONTH STUDENT COMPETITION
In collaboration with Johns Hopkins, the Creative Alliance hosts a Black History Month Student Competition featuring artwork by Baltimore public school students. Students from kindergarten through twelfth grades create mixed-media works to depict the history of African Americans specific to Baltimore City. All entries are awarded cash prizes in support of their school’s arts programs, courtesy of the Johns Hopkins East Baltimore Community Affairs Office. FEB 8 | Zydeco Dance Party: C.J. Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band
C.J. Chenier is “the true royal successor” of his pioneering father, the King of Zydeco, Clifton Chenier. Like his father Clifton before him, C.J. Chenier embraces the zydeco imperative to laissez les bon temps rouler: “Our main goal,” he declares, “is happy feet and happy faces.”  More Info & Tix 

FEB 16 | ALSARAH & THE NUBATONES W/ J POPE & THE HEARNOW
Tonight is the second part of our series Nisa’a/Women: Muslim Cultural Identity-Six Women on Stage and in Conversation. Nisa’a celebrates the powerful artistry of women with roots in Muslim communities in the U.S. and around the world. During extended engagements in the city, these artists perform and participate in conversations with students at Baltimore City schools and audiences at the Creative Alliance. The dialogue will focus on challenging prevalent stereotypes and building a deeper understanding of the vast artistic identity that is part of the extraordinarily diverse Muslim cultural world. MAR 2 | NINA SIMONE – MIRIAM MAKEBA TRIBUTE WITH AKUA ALLRICH
Given her ability to capture the essence of a broad range of musical genres, Allrich is often compared to legendary artists such as Oscar Brown, Jr., Miriam Makeba, and Nina Simone. Akua will honor both female luminaries  in this evening’s program. More Info & Tix

MAR 9 | LONNIE HOLLEY W/ Paul Rucker
Artist and musician Lonnie Holley recorded his first album in 2012 when he was 62-years-old after making home recordings for more than two decades. More Info & Tix 

MAR 18 | BALTIMORE PLAYS: THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL 20th ANNIVERSARY
Celebrate Fat Tuesday a few days early with one of the masters of New Orleans rhythm and blues, the great Walter Wolfman Washington. His guitar style combines both rhythm and blues, blues, New Orleans funk, and modern jazz into a way of playing that is uniquely his. More Info & Tix
