In Baltimore, 33% of residents don’t have access to a car and low-income or minority households are more likely to use bikes as a necessary mode of transportation to work or school. Yet many women and people of color find barriers to bicycling in their paths. These individuals often feel less welcome in biking spaces, live in neighborhoods that lack bike infrastructure, and are more likely to experience street harassment. Take a ride with us as we tour the Highlandtown community on two wheels and experience some of the challenges that cyclists in our community face first hand. Following the ride, stick around for a screening of Afghan Cycles which uses the bicycle to tell a story of women’s rights - human rights - and the struggles faced by Afghan women every day.

Visit a showcase of a variety of local refugee and bike organizations outside of the screening and learn how they are working within our community to convene a diverse force for equitable transportation advocacy in Baltimore.

ABOUT THE FILM:
Afghan Cycles follows a new generation of young Afghan women cyclists. Afghan Cycles uses the bicycle to tell a story of women’s rights - human rights - and the struggles faced by Afghan women every day. From discrimination to abuse, Afghan women experience an oppressive silencing of their voices in all aspects of contemporary society. These women ride despite cultural barriers, lack of infrastructure, and threats to their physical safety, embracing the power and freedom that comes with the sport. Afghan Cycles follows members of the National Cycling Team in Kabul and young riders in the Bamiyan region, who are using mountain bikes to commute to school and run errands. For all of them, the bicycle is a symbol of freedom.

Bikemore is Baltimore’s livable streets advocacy organization We advocate for policies and infrastructure that create thriving neighborhoods in Baltimore. We work to expand protected bicycle infrastructure between our neighborhoods and work within neighborhoods to ensure policies are in place so the goods and services people need are easily accessed on foot or by bike. We focus on putting people before cars and expanding opportunity for all of Baltimore's residents.
