CANCELED - Acting for Business Professionals
Event Type: Workshops
Looking for ways to become a more effective communicator? Searching for ways to help your work team improve their ability to create and collaborate? Are you the sort of person that ranks public speaking as a fear greater than death?
Then ACTING for BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS is for you.
This class takes the playful fun of an improvised acting class and applies those skills to the challenge of being a more effective and compelling speaker and leader in the workplace. Over the course of six weeks, this class will combine improvisational and scripted acting techniques to give you greater physical and vocal ease during all forms of public speaking.
In the first two weeks of the class, students will learn the basics of Improvisation. This skill, which anyone can learn, will help you silence the inner critic, the voice of self doubt that nags away and creates paralyzing anxiety in front of an audience. Improv will also help you be more comfortable with uncertainty, keep moving in the face of failure, and open up your inherent creativity.
In the third and fourth weeks, we will focus on skills taken from scripted acting. In particular we will focus on simple approaches to relaxing the body and voice and approaching a text in the way an actor does to communicate as clearly and effectively as possible.
In the final two weeks, we will pull together all the skills from the first four weeks of class and apply them to extemporaneous speaking as well as short pieces of text.
The class will be taught by Mike Harris. Mike has been the Artistic Director of the Baltimore Improv Group (BIG) since 2010, and a performer and teacher with BIG since 2006. He created BIG's Applied Improv for Corporate Clients, and has taught for clients including: T. Rowe Price, BlueCross BlueShield, Johns Hopkins Hospital & University, the Annie Casey Foundation, PayPal and The World Bank, amongst many others.
He is also a faculty member of the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in D.C. and a member of Actors' Equity who has performed in over 50 theatrical productions across the country.
Six Mondays, September 11 – October 16 | 7 – 9pm | $180, $160 members
