A World of Music at Creative Alliance this March!

Creative Alliance | Bringing Women Performers from Muslim Backgrounds to Baltimore

It’s possible that our March schedule is the most musically diverse in the history of Creative Alliance. From ancient Moroccan trance sounds to Tuvan throat singing to Brazilian samba, it is a lineup of wildly thrilling world sounds.

Afro-Colombian Dance Party w/ Tribu Baharu

Champeta is Afro-Colombian music that was born on Colombia’s Atlantic Coast in the 1970s and ’80s. It was created when traveling West African sailors docked in Colombian ports, like Cartagena and Barranquilla, brought with them LPs of Congolese soukous as well as Ghanaian and Nigerian highlife bands. Hailing from Bogotá, Colombia, Tribu Baharú are the most important Afro-Champeta band on the international scene. Tix & Info

Korean Shamanic Percussion: Noreum Machi

The term Noreum Machi refers to a performer who is so skilled that no one would dare to follow them on stage. The group specializes in the virtuosic Korean percussion music known as Samul-nori. Coming from Korea, Noreum Machi’s colorful program includes spectacular percussion dialogues, haunting shamanic chants, and entrancing acrobatic dances. Tix & Info

Nina Simone-Miriam Makeba Tribute with Akua Allrich

Just in time for Women’s History Month, we bring back one of our favorite events and celebrate two of the most important voices in musical history. Akua Allrich, a jazz treasure, has a vocal style that is fluid and ever-evolving. Her musical roots run deep into blues, soul, and rhythm and blues, with a clear grounding in jazz and pan-African music. Tix & Info

Viva Brasil! Costumed Carnival Dance Party!

Our annual celebration of Brasil! The dance floor is open! Come ready to dance to forró, samba, choro! Watch costumed carnival dancers and enjoy food and drink specials. New this year, we open the lounge for some live choro music, an acoustic samba style sometimes called the “New Orleans jazz of Brazil” Tix & Info

Bombino w/ Dead Messengers

Born and raised in Niger on the northern city of Agadez, Omara “Bombino” Moctar, a Tuareg guitarist and songwriter, was raised during an era of armed struggles for independence and violent suppression by government forces. His electrifying jams capture the spirit of resistance and rebellion while echoing with guitar riffs reminiscent of fellow Africans Tinariwen and Ali Farka Touré, not to mention rock and blues icons such as Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, and Jimmy Page. Tuvan Throat Singing: Alash Ensemble

Masters of traditional Tuvan instruments as well as the art of throat singing, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time, Alash are deeply committed to traditional Tuvan music and culture. They are also fans of western music. Believing that traditional music must constantly evolve, the musicians subtly infuse their songs with western elements, creating their own unique style that is fresh and new, yet true to their Tuvan musical heritage. Noura Mint Seymali w/ Konjour Collective

Noura Mint Seymali is a nationally beloved star and one of Mauritania’s foremost musical emissaries. Born into a prominent line of Moorish griot (West African praise singers, poets, and musicians) Noura began her career at age 13 as a supporting vocalist to her step-mother, the legendary Dimi Mint Abba. From a very early age she was trained in instrumental and vocal technique by her grandmother Mounina, mastering the ardine, a harp reserved only for women, and singing at weddings with family. Jajouka Baraka with Bachir Attar

Inspired by the intoxicating sounds of the legendary Master Musicians of Jajouka of Morocco, this ensemble of musicians from both sides of the Atlantic – Morocco and the US — explore the potential for sound to trigger a state of ecstasy. For this show the group uses sessions recorded in the 1970s between Ornette Coleman and the Master Musicians of Jajouka as the inspiration for a night of music and collaboration. Tix & Info
